Inside the Carmel Palladium...

Mar 26, 2010 by Hamilton County CVB

This week, some of the 8 Great Staff members were given a behind the scenes tour of the Carmel Palladium.  All I can say is WHOA.  Throughout the tour, I heard that the building will stand the test of time for the next 150, 500 or 1,000 years! While I thought that was a neat piece of information, I thought I would share other cool facts and photos from my hour inside the Carmel Palladium:

  • Nearly 40,000 cubic yards of dirt were removed for construction of the building.
  • Approximately 6,750 cubic yards of concrete were used in the construction of the building.
  • There are approximately 6,000 pieces of steel in the structure.
  • It takes nearly 15,000 pieces (35,000 cubic yards) of Indiana limestone to clad the building.

  • The roof, which will eventually be clay tile, of the building is made up of 1’0â€? thick precast concrete to achieve acoustics.
  • 2 1/2â€? doors and 2 1/2â€? thick plaster are found throughout the Main Hall for ideal acoustics.
  • The main floor and stage will be covered by a wood floor to enhance the acoustics.
  • The Hall houses a special acoustic canopy made up of space framing and large, thick shapes of glass.
  • At the top of the main hall is an Oculus (pretty window type thing) with a STC65 rating (Sound Transmission Control) sound barrier and shade to block out exterior sounds and light when required.

  • The design is a traditional “shoe boxâ€? shape, with high ceilings and massive, sound-reflecting walls, and surface detailing that creates sound reflection at different frequencies.
  • The building has three entrances to accommodate patrons entering from different locations.
  • Seating for 1600 patrons, approximately 800 of these are located on the main floor, more than 600 patrons will have access to box seating at multiple levels.
  • There is audience seating behind the performance platform.

  • The main lobbies will have approximately 8,500 square feet of 2â€? stone flooring.
  • There are 32 stairs in the building, including 2 grand stairs, to allow patron movement between floors.
  • There will be approximately 7,000 square teet of shell space available to display the Michael Feinstein Foundation and collection.
  • The building has 7 accessible exterior terraces located on all sides of the building.

  • To date, there have been approximately 250,000 man-hours spent to date on construction activities and 300 workers.
  • A total of 28 Prime Contractors representing 6 Central Indiana Cities, 5 States & 2 Countries (USA & Canada)
  • A total of 10 specialty consultants have been used in the design/development of the project.
  • Programming will include a Great American Songbook Series, jazz, dance, classical and country concerts, as well as appearances by world-famous symphonies, singers and musicians.  Free shows will occasionally be offered to the public.
  • The name was chosen to align with the “architectural magnificence of the building’s design.â€? – Steven Libman, Executive Director.
The grand opening of The Palladium is set for Saturday, January 29, 2011. [caption id="attachment_1925" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="The Main Entrance - for now..."][/caption]
