One of the best things about summer is eating outdoors. Picnics at the park, cookouts in the backyard, breakfast on the porch…there’s just something relaxing about meals that include sunshine, breeze and birds.

A few crisp mornings remind us summer won’t last forever, and we’ll have to drag ourselves back inside. But before we do, let’s take advantage of every last meal we can enjoy outside. Below are some of my top picks for outdoor dining at restaurants across Hamilton County.

The next time you’re in the mood for a change of scenery, do yourself a favor: Hop in the car and head to northern Hamilton County, where suburban development gives way to pastoral landscapes and farm markets are more prevalent than roundabouts. It took me more than a decade to discover the “other” Hamilton County north of State Road 32, and now others are catching on, too.

It’s the most magical (and delicious) time of the year!

Well, it is for me, at least. See, I love fall. I also love apples that are hand-dipped in caramel and sprinkled with chopped peanuts. And these two loves of mine have come together year after year at the Apple Store at Conner Prairie in Fishers, Indiana.

There’s still time to cross off those can’t-miss experiences from your summer bucket list.

Summer may be slowly winding down, but festival season is in full swing in Hamilton County. Celebrate the last blast of the season with two popular festivals in Carmel, Indiana: Artomobilia and Greekfest. Since they fall on the same weekend, it’s a one-two punch of festival fun and memories to be made.

There’s nothing worse than being hungry and searching for a restaurant as your kids begin melting down in “hanger.” Recently, my husband and I found ourselves on yet another Friday night, trying to decide where to head for dinner with our kids. Our criteria for a great restaurant is like most parents: yummy food for the whole family and kid-friendly options on the menu - bonus points for quick service or fun kid activities. Luckily for us, Hamilton County, Indiana is full of family-friendly dining options!

Whether you’re the world’s craft cheeseburger connoisseur, a culturephile looking for a Hawaiian vacation right in your backyard or a local food fanatic seeking nature’s bounty all in one place, Hamilton County, Indiana has something just for you. Check out some of Yelp’s favorite things to do, see and eat along the Monon Trail.

It’s a rite of passage for every kid from Indiana - that first taste of our state’s culinary history, the edges of deep fried crunchiness dangling past the bun. No self-respecting Hoosier parent would deny their children the chance to partake in this celebration of Midwest flavor. That’s why I recently set out to introduce my son to the venerable pork tenderloin sandwich.

I love a classic tenderloin sandwich as much as anyone. But sometimes, it’s nice to switch things up. Tons of Hamilton County restaurants are participating in Tenderloin Tuesdays, but just a few of them are plating up twists on the classic. Below are my picks for a few worth sampling.

A Tale of Two Tenderloins

As a native Hoosier, I’ve eaten hundreds of breaded tenderloin sandwiches. I don’t really need a reason to indulge in crispy pork goodness, but I’m a creature of habit, so I welcome Tenderloin Tuesdays every summer as a reminder to try something new.

This year, I followed the Tenderloin Trail to Carmel, where husband-and-wife team Kevin “Woody” and Chef Richelle Rider own two distinctively different eateries, each with its own take on the unofficial state sandwich.
