Every week this winter, we will highlight one of our Hamilton County, Indiana restaurants. This week we are all about the pizza at Mellow Mushroom in Carmel, Indiana.

For purposes of full disclosure, Mellow Mushroom does serve much more than pizza. They have hearty calzones and hoagies, a yummy tortilla soup and a great Chef Salad. But if I am going to Mellow Mushroom, it's typically to get one of the specialty pizzas. The only problem is that there are too many to choose from! The Philosopher's Pie is my latest favorite. It is an olive oil and garlic base pizza, topped with loads of grilled steak, Portobello mushrooms, artichoke hearts, kalamata olives and a feta, mozzarella, provolone cheese mixture. It's a little bit like a Philly Cheese Steak on a crust but, when you add the olives and artichokes, it has a salty, sweet side too. All together satisfying, even if I can only eat one slice before I am full. You can't go wrong with the House Special topped with traditional favorites  - and lots of them. This pizza has pepperoni, sausage, ground beef AND bacon. It also has a full assortment of veggies and extra cheese. Yum. If you are a little more adventurous, try the Red Skin Potato Pie. With the applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onions, cheeses, sour cream and chives, it tastes a little bit like a really good batch of potato skins. Of course you can build your own pizza too. See just how creative you can be! As they say at Mellow Mushroom, "Come in with an open mind and an empty stomach."
