Each month, Nickel Plate Arts presents a showcase of artwork by a local artist or art group inside our Stephenson House Gallery. For the month of December, we’ll be displaying the artwork of local artist Shakila Garugu. A self-taught artist and art instructor, Shakila was inspired by the artwork of her mother and found a passion for painting after she obtained a Master’s degree in Mathematics. Working in oil paint, acrylics, watercolors, charcoal, and pencil, Shakila’s work is mostly realistic, particularly so with her vibrant portraits in which her subjects are brought to life. Nickel Plate Arts will host an opening reception on Friday, December 1st from 6-9pm alongside our First Friday celebration, and the public is invited to attend. After the reception, the exhibit will be viewable during our normal gallery hours, Wednesday - Friday from noon - 5pm and Saturdays from 10am - 5pm through December 30th. Many works will be for sale and would make great gifts for the art enthusiast on your holiday shopping list.
