Family Weekend Getaway in Hamilton County, Indiana

Start off your trip in the city most recently named the Best Place to live in American: Carmel, Indiana. You’ll love spending the day exploring the Arts and Design District, a state-designated cultural area where art galleries, eateries and boutiques align. Make sure you stop and snap some touristy selfies with the 17 lifelike statues along Main Street. Don’t miss the Evan Lurie art gallery or the unique Museum of Miniature Houses where tiny dollhouses will have you scratching your head wondering how something so tiny was created. Feeling outdoorsy? You can rent bikes and explore the colorful strip of the 18+ miles of the Monon Trail, which reaches to downtown Indianapolis. Along the way, expand your palate and try the best authentic Jamaican food at Jamaican Reggae Grill or trek through Central Park to see the trails, boardwalks and natural wetlands. In the mood for something sweet? Try the milkshakes at Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream, located right off the bike path. Or head to Quirky Feather Confectionary where the shop is open late and offers sweet treats like tiramisu, raspberry tartlets and old fashioned chocolate chip cookies. As the night sets in, prepare for some coziness at Springhill Suites in Carmel where you’ll have access to a fitness center, a pool, a mini-fridge and a microwave.

It’s the weekend so hit the snooze button and enjoy the ZZZs before dragging yourself to breakfast at either Café Patachou for some adult beverages of lavender prosecco cocktails or coffee and homemade doughnut holes at Bub’s Café. You’ll need the carbs and energy before you zip, trot and shoot at Strawtown Koteewi Park in Noblesville. The 750-acre park has guided horseback riding at K-Trails, treetop trails at Aerial Adventures and archery for all ages at the Archery Range. For dinner, head over to the nearby Big Dog’s Smokehouse BBQ where you’ll be licking your fingers from the baby back ribs, pulled pork and campfire s’mores. More desserts can be found up the road at Alexander’s on the Water where you can view the scenes of Morse Lake while you enjoy an ice cream cone.

Wake up and get goin’ to a local favorite of Rosie’s Café for a unique spin on the Hoosier sandwich: the pork tenderloin benny with poached eggs and sausage gravy. You also can’t go wrong with the homemade bread or the ooey, gooey butter cookies. Once you’re good and stuffed, spend the day at Conner Prairie in Fishers, an interactive history park that recreates the 19th century. Ride up in the air in the 1859 Balloon Voyage where you can see the Indianapolis skyline or pet the rare farm animals. For lunch, try Pure Eatery, a local spot where soups and dressings are made from scratch. Before you depart and conclude your weekend, stop by Flat Fork Creek Park and play in the treehouses, walk the trails or take family pictures along the boardwalks.
