Since 1987, sports organizations around the nation have recognized National Girls and Women In Sports Day (NGWSD), which is observed this year on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The Women’s Sports Foundation notes that more than 300 community and school organizations host events celebrating the day, and the Indy Ignite are no different.
The Ignite will host several festivities before their home match on Feb. 6 against the Omaha Supernovas. A panel of female sports leaders will speak along with Sheri Fella, founder and CEO of sponsor Bloombase. Also, the local chapter of WISE (Women In Sports & Events) will be present.
“At Indy Ignite, we celebrate the values around National Women and Girls in Sports Day every day. In fact, it’s built into our vision statement to ‘inspire women to achieve their dreams with relentless ambition by supporting female athletes and igniting a passion for women’s pro volleyball across Indiana’,” said Carly Klanac, Ignite VP of Marketing & Gameday Experience.
In addition, Marvella, a girls' sports leadership project dedicated to shaping women athletes into successful leaders, will be highlighted along with the Girls, Inc. organization and the Evansville United Volleyball Club. NGWSD has a strong and growing online presence, leading the way for growth in coverage and exposure for all women’s sports.
“We love seeing all the online support for women in sports. It’s inspirational to see so many people from across the country identifying with this growing movement,” Klanac said. “We also love when fans and organizations use their time and resources to elevate women and girls in sports.”
The Ignite hosted off-season youth clinics with more plans for the future and held autograph sessions for kids at matches. Klanac says the Ignite players enjoy the engagement at their home matches, which has translated to on-court success early. The Indy Ignite started the season with a 3-1 record, which gave them a league-best .750 winning percentage through the first two weeks of the season.
