Southern Living recently named the Carmel Arts & Design District “one of the best small town Main Streets in America,” and it’s easy to see why. With a focus on art galleries and local shops and restaurants mixed in, this area is a must-see when visiting Carmel, Indiana.
Evan Lurie Gallery
You can’t miss the Evan Lurie Gallery, with the large brick installation out front replicating a human head. Evan Lurie Gallery focuses on work from international artists, ranging from contemporary abstract styles to realism and neo-realism. Gallery director Lurie is from New York and frequently travels to Europe.
Carmel Arts & Design District
The Carmel Arts & Design District is one of two state-designated cultural districts in Hamilton County, located along Main Street in downtown Carmel. Beyond the Evan Lurie Gallery, there are a number of local art galleries located within walking distance, making it an art lovers paradise. Visit on the second Saturday of every month for a gallery walk through the district with special events. You’ll also find 17 life-like statues dispersed through the district, created by artist J. Seward Johnson Jr.
Carmel hosts the Art of Wine festival every July and the International Arts Festival in September.
