Diwali: 101
The Diwali festival is a Hindu celebration that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, represented by light overcoming darkness. Although the holiday’s origins are debated, historians estimate that Diwali has been celebrated since the 7th century in India. The holiday spans a five-day period, during which families turn on Diwali lights (thought to ward off evil) and enjoy various traditions, including decorating their homes and exchanging gifts with loved ones.
During this period, Diwali celebrations abound, including the one taking place in Carmel this fall!
What to Expect at the Diwali Celebration?
Each year, the Diwali celebration is held on the Carter Green in Carmel near the Palladium Center, and is open to the public. Here is what you can expect:
Food Vendors
Carmel’s food vendors will serve up a wide range of options, from flavorful Indian dishes to street snacks and sweet treats. Expect everything from butter chicken, samosas, and chaat to traditional desserts like honey-coated ladoos and warm gulab jamun.
To become even more acquainted with Diwali’s culinary offerings, be sure to try Indian food across Hamilton County at local favorites like Fresh Indian Grill and Aroma Experience.
Traditional Art
Diwali is all about visuals! During the celebration, you’ll see rangoli (bright, geometric designs typically made at the entrances of homes during the festival), adding bursts of color to the event. At Carter Green, henna stands will offer intricately drawn body art for anyone who wants to take home a piece of the experience!
Music and Dance Performances
Expect lively music and dance performances throughout the evening at Carter Green, showcasing a variety of South Asian traditions. Diwali festivals often feature high-energy choreographies, as well as classical Indian dance forms such as Bharatanatyam or Kathak.
Keep an eye out for fireworks later in the evening, a festive highlight that lights up the sky in true Diwali spirit!
