Discover Authentic German Food, Drinks and Gifts
Back to Top of ListOne highlight of the Carmel Christkindlmarkt is its commitment to preserving Germany's Christmas market traditions. More than 60 wooden huts offer authentic products and foods that bring old-world holiday traditions to life. Browse gifts and decorations, including wooden toys, nutcrackers, pyramids, cuckoo clocks, Bier steins, ornaments, and other specialty items. Many products are imported from Germany, making it a great place to find distinctive holiday gifts.
Come hungry, too! Traditional German flavors are part of the experience. Look for favorites such as bratwurst, Lebkuchen, raclette, Döner kebab, Stollen, Kartoffelspieß (spiralized potatoes), chimney cakes, and German pretzels. Warm up with hot cocoa made with Belgian chocolate, a mug of Glühwein (spiced mulled wine), or Glühbier (mulled beer). Don’t forget to pick up one of the Market's collectible boot mugs, a holiday favorite.
Experience German Culture
Back to Top of ListOne of the Market's most recognizable landmarks is its Glühwein Pyramid, inspired by the traditional German Weihnachtspyramide, or Christmas pyramid. These elaborate wooden decorations have a long history at German Christmas markets. The Carmel Christkindlmarkt brought the tradition to the United States with the country's first pyramid of its kind.
The impressive structure stands 33 feet tall, features more than 3,000 lights, and weighs an estimated 10 tons. It is made of maritime pine plywood, and an electric motor powers its rotating fan blades.
Explore the Kulturecke
The Kulturecke is a mini-museum that invites visitors to learn about Indiana's German-American heritage. It was developed in partnership with the Indiana German Heritage Society and highlights the contributions of German immigrants to Indiana's business, education, architecture, and holiday traditions. In 2026, it’s being reimagined, so be sure to check it out!
Meet the Artisans at the Werkstatt
The Werkstatt, or workshop, offers a front-row seat to the craftsmanship behind traditional German art and gifts. At this hut, you can meet German artisans, watch demonstrations, and learn about traditional skills that are becoming increasingly rare, giving you a chance to appreciate the artisans working to preserve them.
Family-Friendly Activities at the Christkindlmarkt
Back to Top of ListThe Kinderecke (Kids Corner) is a special hut where children can make holiday crafts and German-inspired creations. The Spielhaus (Playhouse) offers kid-friendly entertainment and character appearances, including Santa and his elves, princesses, magicians, musicians, or Sankt Nikolaus, as well as puppet shows.
Families can also pick up a Kinder Club Passport at the Kinderecke, Spielhaus, or Guest Services hut. Follow the passport signs around the Market, collect stamps, and return to the Guest Services hut for a small prize. For another activity, grab a Market Scavenger Hunt to test your knowledge of German culture and traditions.
The Kugelbahn is a traditional German marble run that lets visitors drop a wooden ball through a series of tracks, turns and drops. The installation celebrates Seiffen, Germany, a town known for its woodworking traditions and placement of Kugelbahnen around the town, and a sister city of Carmel.

Tips for Visiting the Carmel Christkindlmarkt
Back to Top of ListPreparation can help you spend less time waiting in lines and more time enjoying the Market. Here are a few tips for parking, choosing when to visit, and deciding which food vendors to visit first.
When to Visit to Avoid Crowds
Weekends in December tend to draw the largest crowds, especially in the evenings. Consider visiting on a weekday. Wednesdays and Thursdays between 4 and 6 p.m. are typically the least busy times. Arriving before the dinner rush can also mean shorter lines at popular food vendors, giving you more time to explore the Market, and a better chance of sampling your favorites without spending as much time waiting.
Best Time to Visit Popular Vendors
These are popular food and drink destinations early in your visit:
- Glühwein Pyramid
- Alpenlodge
- Wurst Haus
- Raclette Chalet
- Schnitzel & Sauerkraut
- Kartoffelpuffer Küche
- Das Pretzel Haus
Visit these vendors early for your best chance at avoiding a long line. Right at noon when the Market opens on Saturdays and Sundays is also a great option.
Where to Park at the Carmel Christkindlmarkt
One of the best things about visiting Carmel is that parking is free! The Christkindlmarkt recommends using nearby parking garages, surface lots, or the designated shuttle parking lot on weekends, when crowds are larger. Accessible parking is available at the Tarkington Garage (near 3rd Avenue SW) for visitors with qualifying disability parking tags or license plates.
For the latest parking information and shuttle details, check the Carmel Christkindlmarkt website before your visit.
