Explore the rich roots of the Nickel Plate Railroad with railbikes! With only a few railbikes available in the Midwest, the Nickel Plate Express offers the first of its kind in Indiana.

What is a railbike?

Manufactured in Pennsylvania by Rail Gliders, these family-friendly and sturdy “dune buggies” will take you on a fun adventure through Forest Park, no matter what tour you decide to do. Using foot power, the railbikes follow the existing rail lines of the Nickel Plate Railroad. Each railbike carries up to four passengers and the seats are easily adjustable to one’s height and comfortability. Seats are also designed for turning around so you can complete your roundtrip ride once you have reached your designated northern- or southern-most point of your tour. Seatbelts are provided for each passenger and infants under the age of 2 may be strapped to an adult in an infant carrier to ensure a safe adventure. Each railbike comes with a small basket for bags and other items along with cupholders for passengers to bring their own bottled water or purchase one from the railroad store. Feel free to enjoy a snack while riding but remember to gather all trash before exiting.

Upcoming tours for the summer

With all tours departing and returning to Hobbs Station at Forest Park, look forward to two unique tour options this summer that is catered to every individual.

Forest Park Rail Adventure

The anticipation can’t wait? Want to conquer a challenge? Hop on the Forest Park Rail Adventure! Opening in late May, this two-hour tour will depart Hobbs Station going northbound and take you on an adventure through Forest Park. Passengers can expect a manageable incline and possibly even see Mother Nature’s beloved animals such as deer, rabbits, squirrels and other animals. While this roundtrip tour equates to eight miles, there will be a stop at the Davin Wye to turn bikes around to head back to Hobbs Station and for a well-deserved break.

White River Family Cruise

If you’re looking for a relaxing, leisure adventure or an outing perfect for the whole family, aboard the 30-minute White River Family Cruise tour! Beginning in June, this short and scenic ride will depart Hobbs Station heading southbound toward downtown Noblesville. This tour features a 45-minute layover in the Historic Noblesville Square where you can explore the different restaurants and shops it has to offer.

Who can ride the railbikes?

Adults up to 6’4”, a maximum weight of 250 pounds, and children of all ages can enjoy the experience. However, children under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult in the railbike.

How many railbikes are available?

Each tour has seven railbikes or 30 seats plus two additional seats available. If you prefer to enjoy the experience with three other family members or friends, rent the entire bike by purchasing the quad bike rental. Want a solo outing or meet other riders abroad? Opt for the “rail bike rider” single seat ticket.

How much is the experience?

To ride the fun and challenging Forest Park Rail Adventure, single seats are $45 and a quad bike rental is $129. For a leisure ride and downtown Noblesville excursion, single seats are $30 and a quad bike rental is $109. Be sure to note that there is a slight discount to renting the entire railbike!

Where and how can I buy tickets?

Now that you’re prepared, it’s time to peddle the Nickel Plate Express! While walk-up tickets may be available, purchase your tickets in advance to guarantee your ride! Reservations can be made at NickelPlateExpress.com.

Know before you go!

For your convenience and to better your railbike experience, here are answers to commonly asked questions!

What can I expect from my experience?

The railbike tours depart Hobbs Station at Forest Park and ride within 500 feet between each railbike accompanied by a trained tour guide as their leader. But make sure to arrive 15 to 20 minutes early as late arrivals will not be permitted and refunds will not be issued. Upon arrival, all passengers must sign the accident waiver and release of liability form to ensure safety during the excursion. After waivers are signed and seatbelts are fastened, you’re ready to explore your tour!

What should I wear to my railbike tour?

Dress appropriately according to the weather forecast during your scheduled tour. However, comfortable and loose-fitting clothing designed for hiking or cycling is recommended! To finish your outfit, wear closed-toed shoes as they are advised for your convenience and safety. Be sure to apply sunscreen before your ride if you are catching sunny rays and blue skies!

How can the weather conflict with my railbike tour?

Not only is monitoring the weather crucial to ensure the safety of all passengers, but sunshine and cool breezes can add a nice element to your experience! The Nickel Plate Express staff reviews weather radar before departing each tour and has access to Hamilton County Emergency Management alerts. Railbikes will operate in most weather conditions including light to moderate rain and cooler or hotter days, as long as it is deemed safe. If there is continuous downpour or adverse weather conditions, railbike tours may be canceled or delayed until conditions improve. Weather-related cancelation decisions are made about 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time and guests will be issued a full refund.

Will railroad train rides be happening during railbike tours?

No! Daily coordination and communication within Nickel Plate Express occurs to ensure the safety for both railbike and train operators and all guests.
