April is World Autism Awareness Month, and a local Hamilton County bakery is spreading awareness while making some of the best treats in Indiana.
No Label at the Table Food Company
Located on Main Street in the Carmel Arts & Design District, No Label at the Table employs individuals on the autism spectrum. The bakery sells gluten- and dairy-free treats including cakes, cookies, breads, crusts and more.
When owner Shelly Henley’s son Jacob (also known simply as “Chef J”) turned 18 and prepared to transition to adulthood, he told his mom he wanted to be a chef in a restaurant. Nearly two-thirds of people with autism are unemployed after high school, and the statistics decrease as the person ages. So, Shelly decided she and her family would start a business to make Chef J’s dream come true.
No Label at the Table began as a vendor at the Carmel Farmers’ Market and opened its storefront in Carmel in 2017. The bakery has a dedicated gluten-free kitchen and provides employment opportunities and job skills training for people with autism. The menu of baked goods changes daily, and they also sell coffee, kombucha and artwork created by artists on the spectrum.
No Label at the Table accepts special orders and can ship treats anywhere in the United States through online ordering. They also sell at many local businesses in Hamilton County including SoHo Cafe and Gallery.
