If the fall weather has you itching to go outside and enjoy the cool air and admire the fall foliage, take your outdoor adventure to the Monon Trail. This paved path is a favorite of walkers, joggers, bikers, roller bladers and furry friends alike. Lace up your shoes, because we’re taking you for a virtual spin of hotspots to hit when you’re exploring.
There are plenty of access points where you can park and get on the Monon Trail. Bring your bike, roller blades or walking shoes – whichever mode of transportation you prefer!
If you’re traveling north from 96th Street, you’ll loop by the Monon Community Center. Children will enjoy exploring the brand-new West Commons Playground and Splash Pad. For a photo op, head down the sidewalk to the lagoon and boardwalk to connect with nature.
Near Carmel City Hall, you’ll find one of Carmel’s hidden gems – the Kawachinagano Japanese Gardens. This tranquil spot is tucked away from the hustle and bustle with lily pads, Japanese architecture and more. Benches and a shelter make for a great picnic pit stop.
Getting hungry? There are plenty of dining options in Carmel City Center, like Matt the Miller’s, divvy and Eggshell Bistro. Take your taste palette to the Caribbean at Jamaican Reggae Grill, just north of the Palladium. Grab some jerk chicken and a brew from Union Brewing Company next door and sip and savor on the shared patio.
Carmel is a premier shopping destination with galleries and local shops in the Carmel Arts and Design District and retailers in Clay Terrace. Both are easily accessible from the Monon Trail – just make sure you can fit your purchases in your bike basket!
Finish off your excursion at the gorgeous tree canopy found in Westfield between 151st and 156th Street. Stop and enjoy the photo op of the ravine leading to wetlands. From there, you can take your journey north to Westfield to finish off the day!
